Generally, there are two types of crypto wallets- cold and hot.
A cold storage wallet is ‘air-gapped,’ meaning it generates your seed phrase in a device not connected to the internet. This extra layer of protection prevents your phrase from being captured by hackers or malware.
A hot wallet is any wallet that lives on an internet-connected device. They are generally considered less safe, as there are multiple attack vectors that hackers/scammers can use to try and access your funds.
Cold wallets are the safest way to store your digital assets. For one of the most widely adopted and usable options, we recommend the Ledger hardware Wallet as OMI's most comprehensive storage option.
You can interact with OMI directly in Ledger Live (the Ledger wallet companion app), or connect it to a third-party browser wallet such as MetaMask, allowing you to sign transactions and use your tokens across a range of web3 applications and games directly from cold storage.
This is also particularly handy when you want to deposit your OMI tokens to layer 2 and use them in the VeVe app, as you can interact with the bridging site directly from cold storage.
Desktop and cell phone app wallets are considered “hot wallets,” as they live on an internet-connected device.
That includes any mobile-app wallets such as Trust Wallet or the mobile MetaMask wallet, and browser extension wallets such as the MetaMask browser extension and the Coinbase Browser Wallet.
Similarly to cold wallet storage, you can store your OMI tokens in any hot wallet that supports the Ethereum blockchain.
While plenty of user-friendly hot wallets are available, we recommend storing only a small sum of value in a desktop/mobile wallet, as they are more susceptible to attacks such as malware and phishing scams.
Even though you can store OMI in any Ethereum wallet, you may need to manually add the token contract address before your OMI token balance is visible.
Please consult the instructions provided by your wallet of choice to find out how to do so, or learn how to add OMI to MetaMask here.
