Crypto Security is YOUR Responsibility

Digital assets put the power of finance back into your hands, but that also makes you responsible for the security of your tokens if you choose to take custody of them and store them in your personal wallet.

So before we get to wallets themselves, there are a few important things to note when it comes to storing crypto or NFTs in your own wallets, and we encourage you to take the time to read and understand how wallets actually work:

  1. Nothing is actually stored in your wallet. Crypto assets (tokens, NFTs) are stored on the blockchain. The wallet generates a public and private key pair, and a seed phrase that confirms and identifies you as the owner/controller of that key pair. The key pair actually points to an address on the blockchain that maintains the record of your current token holdings and balances.

**When you use a crypto wallet to send funds, what you are actually doing is digitally ‘signing’ transactions to confirm that you are a) the person in control of that key pair (and therefore the tokens at that address), and b) approve sending them somewhere else. 2. The public part of the key pair is your public wallet address. This is the address that you will share with other people, or enter into exchanges as your ‘withdrawal address’ when you want to receive tokens in your personal wallet. 3. When you set up your own wallet, you will record a 12-24 word seed phrase, which is the private part of the key pair- as in KEEP IT PRIVATE). This seed phrase is your ultimate backup code if you ever lose your wallet or device (phone, tablet, laptop, etc….) 4. Your seed phrase is your ultimate backup code, and the ONLY way to regenerate your accounts if you lose your wallet or device. Remember nothing lives on the wallet itself, your tokens live on the blockchain, and your seedphrase lets you unlock your accounts and regain access, should you ever lose your phone or hardware wallet.

You need to record it offline (on paper) and we would recommend storing it in at least two very safe places. If you lose your crypto wallet or device you will need this seed phrase to re-generate and access your accounts again. 5. Seed phrases can be entered into any compatible wallet. That means that ANYONE with your seed phrase can gain access to your accounts using almost any wallet, online or otherwise. Do not store it online, or let anyone see it, or you risk losing your crypto. 6. No one can recover your seed phrase for you. It is unique to your device and in some cases ONLY accessible to view the first time you set up the wallet, so be sure to write it down and store it somewhere safe! 7. Once you have set up your wallet, you will never ever need to enter this seed phrase into ANYTHING again, online or otherwise, unless you lose your wallet. So write it down, store it somewhere safe, and don’t let it fall into unwanted hands.

<aside> 🚨 The ONLY time you will need your seed phrase again is if you have lost the wallet itself and need to recover your accounts, so please be wary of anyone/anything asking for your seed phrase, including any emails that appear legitimate, as they are 100% scams and phishing attempts. 🚨

<aside> 🚧 The most important part of using your own crypto wallet is the seed phrase. You will NEVER need to give this to ANYONE, and you must ensure this never falls into nefarious hands, either online or in person! 🚧

What is an Ethereum Wallet?

An Ethereum wallet stores the information you need to access your ETH (the native token of the Ethereum network) or any other token built on top of the Ethereum blockchain, known as an ERC20 token.

Ethereum is one of the most widely used and integrated blockchains, which means that just about every wallet out there will support Ethereum, and ERC20 tokens, like OMI.
